Next up in this ‘Meet The Band’ series, we have singer, guitarist and founder member, Cameron!
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Session’s guitarist and vocalist since the very beginning!(although I did start on bass first…). I’m also Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University for PGCE Mathematics by day.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Mainly US and UK guitar-based bands ranging from indie to metal. Although I am partial to good acoustic music too 🙂 My favourite guitarists of all-time are James Dean-Bradfield, Tom Morello and John Mayer.
Funniest/craziest Session moment?
There has been so many over the years! The ‘projector’ moment post-gig in Penarth Marina will take some beating… led-astray by Andrew Lawson and Owen Beesley…
What made you decide to join Session?
I was playing bass guitar in another local band from the ages of 15 to 18 and I always yearned to run my own band. I formed Session with Ceri, Andy and our former guitarist Dan Lewis following a conversation at a gig in Cardiff’s Coal Exchange – back in the year 2000!
What is your favourite thing about being in Session?
Performing live and spending time with good friends. I also love knowing that I have put on a good show and contributed to making someone’s evening enjoyable.
What is your proudest musical accomplishment?
Session, without a doubt. Building the band from scratch to the band it is today gives me a huge sense of achievement and pride. The same core values of fun, friendship and professionalism remain to this day.
What is your biggest fear?
The day I have to stop playing football or playing in a band. They make me, “me”.
What motivates you to work hard?
There is something inside me that drives me to aim for the best and to work hard. This can be a hindrance occasionally, but more often than not it helps to achieve the best I can for the band.
What is your favourite book to read?
Genuinely, I don’t have much time to read. Between my work in the university, running Session, playing football, playing guitar, spending time with my wife (Ceri, also in the band), my daughter and my family there isn’t a lot of time left! I do enjoy reading audio production, guitar and car journalism though.
What did you want to be when you were small?
A footballer for Cardiff City
If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would it be?
See my family, play football and then play a gig. In Thailand 🙂
What would you sing at karaoke?
I’d probably attempt a Rage Against The Machine track although it is far outside my comfort zone and Session’s repertoire! (for now…)
What music or radio station do you listen to in the car the most?
Radio 1. Hanging on to my youth, just.
Have you ever had a nickname? What is it?
Cam, Ron, Ferret, Camo. I’ve had a few!
How would the rest of the band describe you?
Good for a laugh and determined.
What’s your life motto?
I don’t have one but if I did it would centre around always doing your best, being honest and being nice to people.
Next up in this series of ‘Meet The Band’ we have bass player, Andrew Brown!
